Created in collaboration with Habiba, this project explores her personal journey of embracing her East African hair and the identity, culture, and memories carried within it.
The work looks at hair as more than a physical feature. For Habiba, it becomes a connection to heritage, femininity, self-expression, and belonging. Her relationship with her natural hair reflects a process of learning, acceptance, and eventually celebration allowing it to exist in its natural texture, volume, and form without feeling the need to reshape it according to external standards of beauty.
Through our collaboration, we wanted to document this relationship and give space to the beauty and complexity of East African hair. The images treat the hair almost as a presence of its own — something that carries history, personality, and a visual language connected to where we come from.
At its core, the project is about embracing what is naturally yours. It celebrates Habiba’s relationship with her hair while opening a wider conversation around identity, heritage, beauty, and the ways we learn to see ourselves.
